Collection includes unpublished writing and original manuscripts by Woody Guthrie: books, articles, poems, plays, essays, notes, and aphorisms (including items from Brooklyn State Hospital). The manuscripts include autobiographical material; political writings; musings on love, sex, relationships and family; material on Guthrie’s Merchant Marine service during World War II; and writings about music.

Guthrie’s completed and unfinished books constitute the major exceptions to strict chronological arrangement.  Segments of each book have been grouped together, even if written over a lengthy period of time. These books include:
