Biographical Sketch:
Michael Ochs earned a B.A. in radio and television writing from Ohio State University. He managed the career of his brother, noted folk singer Phil Ochs, and later headed the public relations departments at Columbia Records, Shelter Records and ABC Records. He has also freelanced for such entertainment publications as Rock Magazine, the L.A. Free Press, Crawdaddy, Melody Maker, Cashbox and Variety. Additionally, Ochs contributed liner notes to a number of record albums.
Ochs established The Michael Ochs Archives in 1977. The Archives houses millions of photographs of musicians as well as film, television and political personalities from the turn of the century to present day.
Among the Archives’ vast resources are the complete photographic works of famed photographers James Kriegsmann, Don Paulsen, Richard Creamer and Earl Leaf as well as all the negatives and transparencies shot for Laufer and Charlton Publications’ classic magazines Hit Parader, Tiger Beat, Right On, Song Hits and Rona Barrett’s Hollywood.
From his collection, Ochs has produced six books: Rock Archives; Elvis In Hollywood; Marilyn: March, 1955; Shock, Rattle & Roll; Marilyn Monroe: From Beginning To End; and 1,000 Record Covers. In addition to his consulting services, Ochs taught a music history extension course at the University of California, Los Angeles and hosted his Archives Alive radio show on KCRW.
Ochs has appeared on the Today Show, the David Letterman Show and Entertainment Tonight; and has been interviewed by the N.Y. Times, Rolling Stone, the Wall Street Journal and USA Today.
