Zilphia and Woody: We Shall Overcome

Join us on Facebook Live August 11 at 6 p.m. CT for a conversation with Kim Reuhl, author of “A Singing Army: Zilphia Horton and the Highlander Folk School,” Candie Carawan, a partner in the work at Highlander in the ‘60s, and John McCutcheon, a master musician who will play Zilphia’s piano as well as join in the discussion of the songs of conscience that came from Highlander.

Zilphia and Woody knew one another and corresponded, and he spent some time at Highlander with her. She published a few of his songs in her songbooks and Highlander song sheets, and he complimented her “full-breasted” singing voice. Both Woody and Zilphia had huge influences on the labor movement and civil rights as did Candie, a culture worker who carried on other parts of Zilphia’s legacy throughout the Civil Rights Movement.
