An enlightening presentation with Sam Flowers and Cady Shaw of the Woody Guthrie Center, where they delve into the complex relationship between Woody Guthrie and issues of race. From his formative years marked by experiences of racism to his transformative moments of empathy and activism, Guthrie’s life offers a compelling narrative of growth, awareness and advocacy.
Using archival pieces, engaging discussion and insightful analysis, we will explore pivotal moments in Guthrie’s life, including his evolution in understanding and addressing racial injustice. We will also examine Guthrie’s courageous stands against racism, including his participation in the Isaac Woodard Concert and his defiant stance alongside Paul Robeson during the infamous Peekskill’s Riot of 1949, among other examples.
