“Putting on Their Fighting Pants: Woody and Friends Sing Wartime Songs on the BBC”
Christy Miller, recipient of the 10th Woody Guthrie Fellowship in 2015, will give a presentation on Woody Guthrie’s involvement in two radio programs that aired on BBC during World War II. The programs included The Martians and the Coys and The Chisholm Trail. The program will examine Guthrie’s songs related to war, specifically World War II. One song includes a song with the lyric, “I then put on my fighting pants.”
Miller currently teaches at the University of Kansas. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Oxbridge music from William Jewell College, as well as a M.M. in musicology from the University of Kansas. She specializes in American folk music and is particularly interested in the repertoire from the Great Depression through the American Folk Revival of the 1960s.
The program is included with admission to the Woody Guthrie Center.
