The Woody Guthrie Center is pleased to announce that the 2nd annual Woody Guthrie Prize will be awarded to Mavis Staples at an event to be held July 22 in Los Angeles. Ms. Staples career began in the 1950’s as part of her family’s group, The Staple Singers. The group became one of the spiritual and musical voices of the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout six decades of her amazing career, Staples has worked with legendary artists such as Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, George Jones, Natalie Merchant, and many others.
As part of the event, the Woody Guthrie Center will also be presenting the first Woody Guthrie Legacy Award to Phil Ochs. The work of both Mavis Staples and Phil Ochs continued the tradition of Woody Guthrie as they spoke out for social justice and positive changes in our world. The Woody Guthrie Center is honored to be recognizing their careers and life work.
