The Woody Guthrie Center staff has been quite busy spreading our message about the power of music! Our first stop was in Kansas City for Folk Alliance International. In addition to setting up a booth in the exhibit hall, we sponsored a showcase room of Oklahoma artists. The Center and these talented artists were a definite hit with the folks attending this conference–what an awakening to the music scene in Oklahoma!
Then we flew to New York City for the inaugural Woody Guthrie Prize ceremony celebrating the life and music of Pete Seeger. We could definitely feel Pete’s spirit with us during the evening. The award was presented to Pete’s grandson, Katima Cahill-Jackson, representing the Seeger family.
After presenting videos about Pete and the WGC, musical performances featured Tony Trischka, Arlo Guthrie, and special guest Steve Martin. Stories were shared, and there was laughter and joy filling the space–what better way to celebrate the spirit of Pete Seeger?
The response about the message of the Center was incredible! We are confident that many of the people in the audience will be making their way to Tulsa very soon. Some of the special guests in the audience whom we met included members of the Leadbelly family and filmmaker Michael Moore. They are so please with what we are doing in Tulsa and want to come see things in person as soon as possible.
The good news continues to spread around the world about our positive message. We couldn’t be prouder!
